National Aboriginal youth suicide prevention

NAYSPS GOAL

The NAYSPS goal is to develop a national approach to Aboriginal youth suicide prevention that will increase protective (preventive) factors such as resiliency and reduce the risk factor associated with suicide.

THE OBJECTIVES MAY BE ACHIEVED BY:

  • Increasing awareness and understanding of Aboriginal youth suicide precention
  • Strengthening key protective factors such as a strong sense of indentity, meaning and purpose and resilience
  • Strengthening and facilitating collaborative approaches and linkages within and across governments, agencies and organizations
  • Developing and implementing locally-driven suicide prevention plans in the First Nation community
  • Improving and increasing crisis reponse efforts to intervene more effectively in preventing suicide and suicide clusters following a suicide-related crisis in the First Nation community
  • Enhancing knowledge development regarding what is known about what works in preventing Aboriginal youth suicicde.

The NAYSPS program is funded by FNIH (First Nation Inuit Health) on a yearly basis and is dependent upon available funding.
